November 4, 2025 – Consumers have a complicated relationship with sugar and alternative sweeteners. Added sugar has become the #1 ingredient consumers are trying to avoid in their daily diets. It is viewed as causing detrimental blood sugar spikes and inflammation in the body, in addition to containing empty calories contributing to weight gain. But at the same time, cane sugar is viewed as the most natural and healthy sweet ingredient, preferred above both natural and artificial sugar substitutes. This apparent contradiction in consumer attitudes creates unique challenges for sugar and alternative sweeteners alike.
