Other perspectives that are important when taking a global market view of weight loss trends are consumer attitudes and behaviors, the dynamics of launches in specific categories, new product launch trends, specific examples of new product innovation.
Overweight and Obesity are High Around the World
Obesity and overweight rates are high around the world, with rates in some countries being higher than in others. In some countries more than seven in 10 adults are overweight or obese. The US and Mexico have particularly high rates of obesity. Rates of overweight are highest in Finland. Consumers in the US and Mexico also tend to lead others in their level of concern about their weight.
Consumers Globally are Concerned About Their Health
Innova Market Insights consumer trends research shows that nearly half of consumers globally report being extremely concerned or very concerned about their physical health. Only a small percentage says that it is not at all concerned. Weight and sleep are the two top concerns that consumers globally have regarding their physical health. Consumers who are the most concerned include those in Latin America, the United States, and India. Consumer trends surveys show that concern about mental health and well-being is similar to concern about physical health. Consumers globally are concerned about health and they are taking action. Many track various aspects of their lifestyle and health. They are willing to embrace various approaches to improving health, including exercising more and changing their everyday diet.

Weight Loss Consumers Globally Have Varied Approaches to Diet
Weight loss trends show that exercise and diet are the top approaches used by consumers to manage their weight. Exercise is the number one approach to weight loss. Traditionally, diet has been the primary approach for weight management. However, the approach to a weight loss diet has shifted recently. Weight loss trends show that similar proportions of consumers either change what they are eating or reduce certain foods and nutrients in their diet. On the reduction side, consumers globally are cutting down on negative ingredients such as fat and sugar. On the additive side, weight loss consumers globally are looking to add nutrients such as fiber and protein that help control their appetite. Some of this is related to the increased use of GLP-1 weight loss drugs, which put a priority on consuming nutrient-dense food and beverage products. However, most participants in global consumer trends research conducted by Innova Market Insights say that they prefer to eat healthier overall rather than follow a specific diet plan. Some consumers looking to lose weight choose to take nutritional supplements.
Consumers globally are the most interested in eating more protein and fiber. At the same time, they want to eat less sugar and fat, and fewer calories. Even so, cutting down on sugar is the top consumer strategy for weight loss.
GLP-1 weight loss medications are a major factor causing changes in consumer approach to weight management. US consumers show broad agreement with the statement that GLP-1 drugs are effective or moderately effective for weight loss. The US leads in use of GLP-1 drugs, with a notable proportion of consumers using or intending to use these weight loss medications. Consumers who use GLP-1 weight loss medications also report changing their diet and they say they are eating more protein and fiber. Additional benefits of GLP-1 medications include regulation of blood sugar, support of energy, and management of fatigue.
Technology is a Tool for Health and Weight Management
Consumers globally also use technology as a tactic to help them manage their activity level and health. In fact, almost one-third of consumers globally who were surveyed by Innova say that they use technology to keep track of their exercise and physical activity. In comparison, about one-quarter report using technology to track their sleep and a similar proportion of consumers report using technology to help manage their weight.
Food, Beverage, and Supplement Launches Support Weight Management Trends
Among the various active health claims in food and beverage launches, weight management is prominent, appearing in about one in 10 product launches with an active health claim. Brands are responding to the popularity of sugar reduction by launching the highest numbers of launches in food and beverage products with a sugar reduction claim.
The growing use of GLP-1 weight loss medications is affecting the market for supplements positioned for weight management. Looking at global supplement launches over a recent 12-month period, weight management is the #13 claim. Also, weight management as a claim is growing a bit more rapidly than supplements are growing. North America has the highest number of launches of supplements with a weight management claim. Many of the supplement launches with a weight management claim also have claims for energy and stamina. Also, supplements with a GLP-1 claim are rising quickly.
