October 1, 2026 – Every month, Innova Market Insights analyzes the major food and beverage trends and how these are manifesting in monthly product launches and innovations. Functional food and beverage innovation is becoming more specific, with products increasingly designed for a specific purpose, benefit, or defined moment in consumers’ lives. Innova’s Innova Insights: September 2026 Edition report explores these shifts, as well as spicy flavor innovation, how GLP-1s are rewriting the weight management playbook globally, and the latest launch highlights.
How Is the Beverages with Purpose Trend Evolving?
Beverages are leading innovation in wellness, and as functional beverage trends in the category continue to grow, the definition of purpose is expanding simultaneously. Dairy producers are elevating milk beyond its core nutritional benefits, especially as the global focus on protein, fiber, and other functional benefits means other beverages are competing by offering the same benefits or more. Carbonated beverages are adding next-generation functional ingredients like postbiotics to impact healthy aging to mood, better sleep, and stress reduction. The connection between microbiome health and overall well-being is also driving innovation. Ārepa, for example, launched The Brain and Gut Soda line to support both mental clarity and gut health, with prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics.
How Are Innovations Reflecting the Growing Authentic Plant-Based Trend?
Regarding plant-based trends, innovation is moving toward designing products that rely on plants for their inherent benefits, rather than for imitation. According to Innova’s research on global food trends, 48% of consumers globally understand the concept of nutrient density, but only half apply it by seeking out products with related claims. Brands like Mushroom Squared are closing this gap with plant-based innovation, introducing their all-natural, plant-based, and nutrient-dense Maitake Super Mushroom Patty. Each of the three varieties draws on different aspects of what makes Maitake beneficial, including gut-heart, cognitive, and metabolic benefits. In New Zealand, Tom & Luke’s Snackaballs line also combines whole-food plant-based ingredients, a nutritionally dense formula, and targeted functional benefits for each of its three snack varieties.
Where Are Brands Leveraging the Made for Moments Trend in New Product Development?
Encouraging consumers to eat or drink a product at a higher frequency not only boosts sales but also helps establish their connection to a brand. Linking these moments to an occasion and promoting habitual consumption are two ways to achieve this. Taiwan’s Wei Chuan’s Health Life Bedtime Milk is an example tailored for pre-sleep rituals. Infused with tryptophan, GABA, and sesamin, it promotes calm and helps stabilize mood for sleep. Pluckk’s new cold-pressed, single serve Recovery Punch and Haemo Boost juices are other occasion-driven innovations. With just four ingredients, the former is intended for post-workout occasions or for the evening wind-down by supporting muscle recovery and joint discomfort.

How Are Hot & Spicy Flavors Offering Global Routes to Adventure & Sensory Bliss?
Hot and spicy flavors are expanding across categories and flavor innovation. According to Innova’s research on food trends 2026, more than half of global consumers are looking for flavors they have never tried before, and the variety of spices across cultural cuisines is an ample place for opportunity. Consumer palates are increasingly accustomed to spiciness, as seen by the popularity of Korean cuisine.
The latest collaboration by Huer Foods and Cholula demonstrates this shift in flavor trends, as the Cholula Chamoy Tropical Ring Mix Gummies bring authentic Mexican heat to confectionery. African heat may also be challenging the dominance of Asian or Latin American heat. For example, Long Clawson Dairy in the UK is adding red pepper granules and a smoky harissa seasoning to its Discoveries Harissa Bloom product for an added kick.
A spicy boost can also invigorate beverage innovation, from sparkling sodas to immunity shots, and mocktails. Tianyou Dairy combines fresh Sichuan pepper oil with cow’s milk for its Tianyou Green Sichuan Pepper Milk to add a tingling, numbing sensation. In addition, nearly two-thirds of Millennials globally say that they want to explore new things when they indulge, and increasingly, sweet and spicy (or swicy) is associated with indulgence. Cocoa Loco delivers on these flavor trends with their Chili & Lime Dark Chocolate bar.
How Is GLP-1 Rewriting the Weight Management Script?
Globally, weight and sleep rank as top physical health concerns for consumers, with an average of 40% citing each. The rise of weight-loss medications and GLP-1 food trends has only accelerated innovation, with weight-management claims growing in food and beverage launches. In the US market, a majority of consumers using GLP-1 medications say that it reduces their appetite, influencing them to eat smaller portions and choose more nutrient-dense options. Perdue’s new line powered Lightly Breaded Chicken Strips, Bites, and Nuggets highlights an example of nutrient density innovation. It boosts protein by 20% by integrating chicken meat into the breading, while also having fewer carbs and no fillers.
Consumers are also looking for satiety solutions, and for many consumers, eating more fiber helps them accomplish that goal. The Low Carb Company has introduced a line of Keto Super Seed Crackers, and its base of sesame, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds as well as chia, flax seeds, and psyllium seed husks offer a high fiber snack. Sugar reduction also remains pivotal to managing weight. Poland’s De Care Group has introduced a line of sugar and fat-free pasta alternatives made with konjac powder to help reach their goals.
