Consumer Food & Beverage Trends in Colombia 2026

August 3, 2026 – As Colombians become more cautious with spending, demand is rising for affordable staples. Innova Market Insights looks at Colombian food and beverage consumption habits and the factors driving shifts in demand across specific categories.

Colombian food and beverage choices are changing due to a number of factors. These include growing uncertainty, inflation, and the visible effects of climate change. As a result, consumers in Colombia are becoming cautious with their spending. This means greater focus on essentials, especially affordable ones. With this in mind, Innova Market Insights looks at Colombian food and beverage consumption trends and the factors that are driving changes across specific categories.

What’s Shaping Food and Beverage Consumption in Colombia?

As awareness increases about personal wellbeing and climate change’s impact on the environment, health and sustainability are shaping food and beverage consumption choices in Colombia. This is affecting the purchase frequency of certain categories.  It is also shifting food and beverage preferences toward nutritious and responsibly sourced options.

One category that is benefiting from this shift is non-alcoholic beverages. This is because of rising consumer interest, as well as alcohol alternatives being seen as healthier than their alcohol equivalent. When choosing non-alcoholic beverages, price and flavor are priorities for Colombian consumers. They are also attracted by claims relating to product safety, reduced sugar, traditionally made, and no artificial ingredients.

How Important are Health Claims in Colombia’s F&B Trends?

Health claims are important to Colombians. Particularly, high protein and fiber, reduced sugar and fat, as well as functional ingredients, are becoming more sought across categories like cereals, bars, dairy, meat, and plant-based foods. However, it is important for Colombians that food and beverage products combine nutritional benefits with good taste.

Focusing on cereals, we see that this category is primarily influenced by health claims in consumer purchasing decisions in Colombia. In cereals, preferred claims include reduced sugar, high in fiber and protein, and no artificial ingredients. Wholegrain, multigrain, and reduced fat are also notable considerations for Colombians when purchasing cereals.

What Role Does Trust Play in Colombian Food and Beverage Trends?

Trust plays an important role in Colombian food and beverage choices. Across F&B categories, product safety and origin are consistently influential claims in Colombia. Strong consumer preference for no artificial ingredients and traditionally made products further cements the importance of trust in the Colombian food and beverage market. Locally sourced and organic certifications also improve the perception of quality and authenticity in Colombia.

One category that is affected by trust claims is confectionery. Colombian consumers are consuming less confectionery due to budget sensitivity & limited healthy options. What appeals to consumers when buying confectionery, particularly chocolate, is price and flavor. Branding is also an important factor. Claims relating to product origin, no artificial flavors or colors, and reduced sugar also appeal to confectionery consumers in Colombia.

Is Flavor Still Influential in Colombian Food & Beverage Choices?

Flavor consistently shapes decisions across a lot of food and beverage choices. Including categories like snacks, dairy, confectionery, ready meals, and plant-based food. Still, budget-conscious behavior is resulting in less consumption in indulgent categories in Colombia. Meanwhile, freshness and health are strengthening purchasing decisions in other categories. Flavor and price are particularly influencing the purchase of savory spreads and dips in Colombia. Claims such as no artificial flavors or colors, product origin, real, natural ingredients, and traditionally made are also favored in savory spreads and dips.

How is Food and Beverage Consumption Shifting in Colombia?

Due to growing interest in healthier options, there is rising consumption of dairy, meat and fish, as well as meat and dairy alternatives in Colombia. Broader product variety is also contributing to increased consumption in these categories. In plant-based foods specifically, consumption is increasing because of perceived health benefits. Other factors affecting plant-based consumption in Colombia are high protein and fiber and organic certification. In plant-based milk alternatives, functional ingredients are particularly appealing to Colombian consumers.

In indulgent categories, like sweet bakery, limited health options and tight budgets are leading to lower consumption. If brands want to meet the shifting needs of Colombian consumers, they need to balance health, affordability, and enjoyment.

What’s Next in Colombian Food & Beverage Trends?

Across food and beverage categories, Colombians are prioritizing flavor and value. That’s why it’s important for brands to maintain quality while improving the affordability and nutrition of their products. Affordable high-protein savory snacks or reduced-sugar dairy products could help brands appeal to Colombians that have tight budgets but want high nutrition in their food. Furthermore, brands can boost appeal through trust and transparency. This can be achieved by developing clean label products and delivering on demand for locally sourced food and beverages. Introducing healthier alternatives in declining categories, especially indulgent ones, will help re-engage consumers who want to indulge but not at the cost of health. Launching products like reduced sugar chocolate or baked high fiber salty snacks could encourage a return to these categories. By focusing innovation on nutrition, trust, and affordability, brands can continue to attract Colombian consumers across food and beverage categories.
