Global

Cheese is a dairy category that many global consumers associate with protein, with 41% turning to it as a key source. However, the conversation is shifting. Consumers increasingly want high-quality, better-absorbing protein, not just more of it. 


Opportunity:
Respond to demand with premium and functional protein positioning

North America

43% of consumers eat cheese as a snack, with snackable formats winning on convenience. Protein sits in the top five positionings on new cheese launches, alongside gluten-free, no preservatives, and natural.


Opportunity:
Offer North American consumers snackable formats with clean, functional credentials

Europe

Cheese remains an European staple, particularly a generational one. Consumption increases with age, with only 47% of Gen Z consumers reporting cheese consumption versus 75% of Boomers. 


Opportunity:
Modernize cheese for younger consumers through health-forward innovation, especially protein. 

APAC

APAC and Southeast Asia report the lowest cheese consumption compared to other region. China illustrates the wider pattern, with 47% of consumers buying dairy products compared to the global average of 68%.


Opportunity:
Building on occasion clarity. Give undecided consumers a simple answer for when dairy fits into their day, and embed it into local traditions where it doesn’t yet feature. 

LATAM

In Brazil, 65% of Gen X and Boomers turn to dairy for protein, compared to only 52% of Gen Z and Millennials, who are less likely to view traditional dairy as a primary protein source. That being said, nearly half of all consumers still turn to cheese for protein.
