Consumer Trends in India 2026: Generational Differences

From Gen Z to Boomers, consumers in India have varying preferences and values for food and beverage depending on age

October 7, 2026 – Growing global uncertainty, inflation, and climate change are all shaping consumer food and beverage choices around the world. Consumers are more cautious with spending, and demand for affordability in value is unsurprising in this context. Health and sustainability are other key factors, and in the Indian market, these factors are all impacting consumers’ consumption habits and what drives demand for them across categories. Innova’s Category Growth Drivers in India report explores these shifts and where consumption is increasing or decreasing for Indian consumers and why.

Introduction to Consumer Trends in India

Compared to other countries, consumers in India are among the youngest in the world. Income is increasing, but consumers are price conscious. They will pay more for premium products but only if products demonstrate a clear benefit to them. The multigenerational Indian household shapes consumer trends because purchases need to be made for the entire household. As a result, they often make food and drink purchase decisions based on advice from family, friends, and experts rather than from messaging by brands. Credibility is a major driving force.

Indian consumers increasingly are also learning about and purchasing food and beverage products from digital channels. This makes purchases more convenient. However, they are not yet fully sold on new technologies and food and beverage categories. Food and beverage brands sold in India have the opportunity to build trust and familiarity among consumers.

Indian Consumer Trends are Household-Based

In India, the core of food and beverage purchases is the household. The most common living situation in India is the multigenerational household. Food and beverage purchases must satisfy the needs of different generations in the family, from children and parents to grandparents. Indian food and beverage brands that end up on top can accomplish dominance by meeting the needs of several generations.

Indian Food and Beverage Consumers are Price-Sensitive

Indian food and beverage households, like people around the world, are price sensitive. However, price sensitivity varies by generation. All generations care about affordability. What differs is their willingness to pay more for certain product features. For example, the older food and beverage consumer values transparency, quality, and trust. The younger Indian consumer is attracted to new experiences and novel products.

Definition of Health in India Varies with Life Stage

Consumer trends research conducted by Innova Market Insights shows that Indian consumers of different life stages have different definitions of health. The younger Indian consumer defines health as weight management, fitness, and an active lifestyle. Among older consumers, prevention and long-term well-being are the major focus. That is why one health message will impact all generations in a household differently.

Tradition & Novelty Under One Roof

In India, novelty and tradition can resonate in the same household. Younger family members are willing to experiment with food and beverage products. In contrast, older family members value familiarity and trust in ingredients and sourcing. Food and beverage brands have the opportunity to add a modern twist to familiar food and drink products by combining new flavors, health benefits, and product formats with messaging that conveys authenticity and builds trust.

What Are Generational Differences Among Indian Consumers?

Indian households reflect the realities of generational differences. The youngest generation, Gen Z, is not yet in control of food and beverage spending in the household because many live with their parents. They are curious about food and beverage products and are willing to try new things, but they have not yet developed premium tastes and are not inclined to pay more for products that are sustainable, functional, or fresh. Millennials are in charge of the household, its spending, and its health. A majority of Indian Millennials acting as heads of households with children. Millennials also are the most likely family members to follow a diet program and track their nutrition.

In India, the Generation X shops for quality. Gen X are most likely to be living in a household with children. They are willing to pay more for premium food and beverage products. Gen X want fewer artificial ingredients. Novelty resonates less with these consumers, who value consistent food and beverage products, products with high integrity in ingredients, and quality. Consumer trends research shows that Indian Boomers are the generation that is most conscious of price, but they will pay more for food and beverage products they trust, as long as products prove their value. Boomers are also most likely to have healthy eating habits.

What’s Next in Consumer Trends in India?

Innova’s consumer trends research shows that Indian consumers do not know a lot about protein, but they are highly willing to increase the amount of protein in their diet. Gen Z and Millennials will become more active in managing nutrition and will need food and beverage products to communicate information about their protein content, protein sources, and health benefits.

Among generations in India, Gen Z has the highest prevalence of stress as a mental health concern. As the younger generations age, they will have a greater influence on household diet and purchases and are likely to rely more on digital resources and peer information. Watch for more products that are targeted toward mental wellbeing for today’s younger generations. The older Indian generations, Gen X and Boomers, are likely to continue seeking products that prove their quality using evidence. This will be more influential than just premium positioning.
